This exhibition is a story about healing—for all of us. The worlds each of us carries are different, but artist Lee Ji Eun believes the exhaustion and uncertainty we feel within them are not so different after all. Through paintings filled with quiet stories, she wanted to gently ease this tired life and mind, even if only a little.
Looking back, Ji Eun feels her paintings have always held rest, stillness, and the process of healing. She finds herself drawing whenever life feels difficult or her mind grows weary, and within that act, she finds a quiet solace. As she sets her complicated thoughts aside and paints, she slowly looks inward, and gains a small strength to move forward again. In this way, painting has become more than simply making something for her—it has become a means of tending to her weary mind, and to herself.
Whether a painting holds humor or sadness, Ji Eun has consistently worked while dreaming of moments and spaces where one can rest for a while. Since she is already living a life full of stimulation, perhaps this is her way of picturing her own utopia—a process of slowly furnishing and arranging her own home and garden. She hopes the landscapes she creates within her paintings can become a comfortable place where someone else, too, can pause for a moment.
She hopes everyone who visits this exhibition can, for a moment, slow their steps and rest. Just as we pause on our way home at the end of the day to watch a beautiful sunset spreading across the sky, or unexpectedly encounter, on a journey, an unfamiliar blue landscape we might otherwise pass by without noticing, she hopes this exhibition can be a time to empty the mind and look back at oneself again.
