Make Space! Use Space! is a participatory performance art piece centered on urban mobility. Participants transport a ”very heavy bag“ (weighing 20 kilograms) from one exhibition venue to another, completing the task by a specified date. The urban landscapes between venues and the act of transporting the bags become integral parts of the artwork itself.

The concept draws inspiration from the art world’s ”courier“ process, where professional handlers accompany and safeguard artworks being transported between institutions. Takehiro Iikawa transforms this professional practice into an artistic action, inviting participants to sign simplified loan agreements and take part in the transportation, simulating the art transfer process. This challenges traditional notions of art display and logistics while highlighting the interaction between individuals and urban spaces.

In Taiwan, the project connects three venues: Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal , Neiwei Art Center, and Artemin Gallery in Taipei, echoing the artist‘s observations of everyday scenes at Osaka’s transit stations. The orderly flow of people pushing luggage carts seemed like a stage perfectly tailored for the artwork. The artist hopes to invite more participants to engage with the project, rethinking the use of space and the possibilities of art.

《Make Space! Use Space!》是一件結合觀眾參與與城市移動的行動藝術作品。參與者需將展場中的「沉重的袋子」（very heavy bag，重達20公斤）運送至另一個展覽空間，並在指定日期前完成運送。展覽場地之間的城市景觀，以及觀眾搬運袋子的行為，本身即構成作品的一部分。

作品靈感源於藝術界的「courier」過程——當作品在場館之間運送時，專業人員會隨行護送。飯川雄大將這一流程轉化為藝術行動，讓觀眾簽訂簡易借用書並參與運送，模擬藝術品運輸過程，挑戰傳統藝術展示與運送的概念，同時強調個人與城市空間的互動。

此次計畫在台灣串聯高雄旅運中心、內惟藝術中心及台北 Artemin Gallery，呼應藝術家於大阪轉運站觀察到的日常景象，推著行李車的人流彷彿為作品量身打造的舞台，藝術家希望邀請更多人參與，重新思考空間的利用與藝術的可能性。

《Mr. Kobayashi the Pink Cat 》
This is a large-scale three-dimensional work that creates a visual impact through its sheer size. Like a real cat, it hides in corners, exuding a playful and charming aura through its peeking posture. When viewers try to photograph the piece, its immense size prevents them from capturing it in full, immersing them in the paradoxical and whimsical experience of a game of hide-and-seek. While photographs can capture its shape, color, size, and position, the fleeting emotional impact of encountering it is impossible to reproduce.

The massive scale is designed to provoke thought: why does such a lovable figure prefer narrow spaces or hide behind buildings and trees? To achieve this effect, the work disrupts the traditional norms of exhibitions in museums and galleries. The production process is constrained by space, making it difficult to move or bring back to the artist’s studio, and its size can interfere with the display of other works. After each exhibition, the piece is dismantled and cleared away. These challenges, though at odds with contemporary trends, are part of what makes the effort so compelling.

《粉紅小林貓》
這是一件以龐大尺寸帶來視覺震撼的立體作品。牠如同現實中的貓，隱身在角落，用窺視的姿態散發俏皮可愛的魅力。觀眾在作品前拍照時，無法完整捕捉全貌，反而沉浸於躲貓貓般的矛盾與趣味中。照片雖能呈現形狀、顏色、大小與位置，但那瞬間的衝動卻難以捕捉。

其龐大尺寸旨在引發觀眾思考，為什麼這樣可愛的形象會偏好狹窄空間或躲藏在建築、樹木之後？為達此效果，創作幾乎顛覆美術館和畫廊的展示常規。製作時空間受限，無法輕易移動或帶回工作室，還可能妨礙其他作品展示。展覽結束後，作品也會被拆解清理。這種嘗試總是與當代潮流背道而馳，但也因此充滿挑戰。

Artemin Gallery to Host Special Extended Exhibition of Iikawa Takehiro ’s Very Heavy Bag—Make Space, Use Space from January 21 to 25

This exhibition not only showcases the physical works of “Very Heavy Bag” but also features the artist’s “Decorator Crab” series, including paintings, sketches, and sculptures that have never been publicly exhibited in Taiwan. It offers a comprehensive display of the artist’s diverse artistic practices and creative concepts.

Very Heavy Bag uniquely integrates audience participation, merging artistic creation with the rhythm of urban daily life. As a piece of performance art, it invites participants to transport a 20-kilogram Very Heavy Bag from one venue to another specified location within the city during the exhibition period. The exhibition connects three locations: the Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal and Neiwei Art Center in Kaohsiung, and Artemin Gallery in Taipei.

Artemin Gallery 將於 1 月 21 日至 25 日舉辦藝術家飯川雄大的〈非常沉重的袋子 Very Heavy Bag—Make Space, Use Space〉特別延伸展覽。本次展覽不僅呈現「非常沉重的袋子」的實體作品，還將展出藝術家從未在台灣公開過的「Decorator Crab 躲貓貓」平面繪畫、手稿以及雕塑創作，全面展現其多元的藝術實踐與創作理念。

飯川雄大的作品〈非常沉重的袋子〉特別融入觀眾參與行為，將藝術創作與城市日常緊密結合。此作品以行為藝術形式展開，邀請觀眾在活動期間，將重量約 20 公斤的「非常沉重的袋子」從一個場館運送到城市的另一個指定地點。展覽串連三地，分別為高雄旅運中心、內惟藝術中心，以及台北的 Artemin Gallery。

The project presented by Iikawa Takehiro invites the audience to transport a work titled “Very Heavy Bag” to another venue in a different city within a designated timeframe. This activity mirrors the companion and supervisory role of museum staff during the handling and transportation of artworks. The journey of transport, blended with daily activities, becomes a form of performance art. After signing a rental agreement, participants must move the approximately 20kg bag onto a pushcart to complete the transportation task. As long as the assignment is finished by the set deadline, participants are free to walk with the artwork, use public transportation, or even take it home. In Iikawa’s project, the simple act of carrying the bag in and out of exhibition venues and meandering through the city landscape becomes an ultimate simulacrum of the signified activity. Composed of ready-made, everyday objects, the “Very Heavy Bag” can be produced anywhere, at any time, breaking the traditional constraints of artworks needing to be formally displayed within fixed exhibition venues. Made of durable sports material to prevent deterioration or wear and tear, the bag serves as a testament to the role of participation and the fluidity of exhibitions. This extended exhibition at Artemin Gallery will also present drawings, paintings and sculptural works that have never before been exhibited in Taiwan.

藝術家展出的作品是邀請觀眾將展覽中的「Very Heavy Bag 沉重的袋子」運送到另一個城鎮的場館，並需於指定的日期内完成。類似於美術館在藝術品運輸時陪同或是監督的概念，搬運的旅途即融入日常的行爲藝術。參與者在簽署租借協議後，將約20公斤的袋子裝上行李推車執行運輸。可攜「作品」步行，也可帶著一起坐上大眾運輸工具，甚至可帶回家，只要在有效日期内完成任務。觀眾將袋子自然地帶出帶進場館的行爲，穿梭城鎮的風景，都將成為作品「擬態」的部分。以日常現成材料創作的「Very Heavy Bag 沉重的袋子」，可隨時隨地製作，又打破了藝術品需被展示在館内的既定限制。袋子選用了堅固的運動包，避免因材料精緻而導致損壞，讓它成為展覽流動性與參與性的延伸表達。本次在Artemin gallery的延伸展覽也將展出從未在台灣展出過的平面繪畫以及雕塑作品。
