Unevenness is the way 維持崎嶇 | Cheng Nung-Hsuan 鄭農軒

Cheng Nung-Hsuan (b. 1983, Taipei) graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Taipei National University of the Arts. He has been recognized with selections in the CTBC Painting Prize, the Taiwan Emerging Artists Award, and the Kaohsiung Award, with works collected by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.

His earlier works focused on erased and reworked portrait paintings as a means of emotional interpretation of everyday social relationships. In his recent practice, Cheng reconstructs narrative methods and compositional models established by classical painting throughout art history, assembling, mimicking, and reshaping them to evoke a theatrical, dreamlike quality. Through this, he explores both tangible and intangible distances between the viewer and the artwork, as well as the gaps and discontinuities arising from Taiwan’s indirect encounters with Western art traditions due to historical and temporal contexts.

鄭農軒（Cheng, Nung-Hsuan，1983-），生於台北，畢業於國立台北藝術大學美術系，曾獲中國信託當代繪畫獎入選、台灣美術新貌獎、高雄獎作品典藏於國立台灣美術館。早年作品以抹除、塗改的人像繪畫，對日常社交關係進行自我情感詮釋。

鄭農軒近期創作透過古典繪畫在藝術史各時期中豎立的敘事方法與造型模式，加以拼湊、模擬、重塑，製造猶如觀看舞台劇般的奇幻感，來尋找觀者與作品間有形與無形的距離，以及台灣因歷史時空等因素，在接受西方藝術文明的間接途徑中，所產生的落差與不連續狀態。

Unevenness is the way 維持崎嶇 | Cheng Nung-Hsuan 鄭農軒

Artemin Gallery proudly presents “Unevenness is The Way,” a solo exhibition by Taiwanese mid-career artist Cheng Nung-Hsuan.

This exhibition continues Artemin Gallery’s curatorial vision of exploring the convergence of Eastern and Western painting languages and the dynamic relationship between abstraction and figuration. With his distinctive brushwork and layered colors, Cheng constructs ever-shifting visual fields, seeking openness in painting between tradition and contemporary, order and chaos.
As an artist constantly evolving in his practice, Cheng Nung-Hsuan’s recent works not only integrate the compositional essence of Western classical painting with the fluidity of Eastern linework but also continuously push the boundaries of his pictorial vocabulary. His paintings juxtapose geometric color blocks with realistic brushstrokes, where dry-brushed lines coexist with delicate layering, transforming the canvas into a theatrical stage of visual and emotional expression. This artistic approach aligns with Artemin Gallery’s commitment to collecting and showcasing works that transcend traditional boundaries while engaging with contemporary sensibilities.
