Small Flame marks Donghoon Rhee’s first solo exhibition in Taiwan, commemorating TWICE’s first solo concert on the island, held in Kaohsiung in 2025, a moment that carried profound cultural and political weight far beyond the stage.

For over a decade, TWICE maintained a deep connection to Taiwan through Tzuyu, their Taiwanese member, yet a solo concert on the island remained out of reach due to political circumstances. When the concert finally took place ten years after the group’s debut, it resonated across both Taiwan and Korea as something larger than a performance. A letter Tzuyu read aloud to the audience became one of the most widely shared moments of the year, moving fans on both sides and beyond.

The exhibition title draws from that letter. The phrase “small flame” recurs throughout Tzuyu’s words, evoking the quiet hope she carried from her trainee years through her debut and beyond, and the sincere desire to protect something meaningful in the face of uncertainty and hardship. For Rhee, it also speaks to the broader layers of the exhibition: the personal and the political, the intimate and the collective, the decade of anticipation that preceded that night in Kaohsiung.

Rhee has long been drawn to the gestures and physical presence of K-pop idols and the way their bodies carry meaning, desire, and collective emotion. In TWICE’s Taiwan concert, he found a convergence of pop culture and political history, a performance that quietly negotiated national borders, belonging, and longing.

Working in sculpture and charcoal drawings, Rhee transforms the gallery into a small temple, a space that holds the concert as a commemorative act, honoring not only the performers but the fans whose devotion outlasted the wait.
