Biography
Cheng Nung-Hsuan (b. 1983, Taipei) graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Taipei National University of the Arts. He has been recognized with selections in the CTBC Painting Prize, the Taiwan Emerging Artists Award, and the Kaohsiung Award, with works collected by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.
His earlier works focused on erased and reworked portrait paintings as a means of emotional interpretation of everyday social relationships. In his recent practice, Cheng reconstructs narrative methods and compositional models established by classical painting throughout art history, assembling, mimicking, and reshaping them to evoke a theatrical, dreamlike quality. Through this, he explores both tangible and intangible distances between the viewer and the artwork, as well as the gaps and discontinuities arising from Taiwan’s indirect encounters with Western art traditions due to historical and temporal contexts.
