Artemin Gallery to Host Special Extended Exhibition of Iikawa Takehiro ’s Very Heavy Bag—Make Space, Use Space from January 21 to 25
This exhibition not only showcases the physical works of “Very Heavy Bag” but also features the artist’s “Decorator Crab” series, including paintings, sketches, and sculptures that have never been publicly exhibited in Taiwan. It offers a comprehensive display of the artist’s diverse artistic practices and creative concepts.
The 2024 Tai Art Festival In Asia New Bay Area special exhibition, 《RESONANT—SUPERPOSITION》, will be on display at the Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal, featuring Iikawa’s Very Heavy Bag. This work uniquely integrates audience participation, merging artistic creation with the rhythm of urban daily life. As a piece of performance art, it invites participants to transport a 20-kilogram Very Heavy Bag from one venue to another specified location within the city during the exhibition period. The exhibition connects three locations: the Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal and Neiwei Art Center in Kaohsiung, and Artemin Gallery in Taipei.
The transportation process simulates the accompaniment or supervision often required when transporting artworks for museums. Audience participation in the act of transporting the bag becomes an indispensable part of the work. Participants must sign a borrowing agreement and can complete the task by walking, using public transportation, or even temporarily bringing the bag home, as long as the mission is completed by February 2. This organic interaction with the city not only enriches the mimetic meaning of the artwork but also engages participants in art creation through everyday activities.
Very Heavy Bag is made of a sturdy tactical backpack, extending the exhibition’s mobility and interactivity while avoiding damage caused by fragile materials. By utilizing ready-made, everyday materials, the work transcends the traditional confines of art confined to gallery spaces. As participants carry the bag through the city, the exhibition moves from static venues to dynamic urban landscapes, seamlessly connecting art with life.
We invite you to visit Artemin Gallery in Taipei and the Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal and Neiwei Art Center in Kaohsiung to take part in this innovative and interactive performance art experience!
