The Cleveland Clinic Art Program is one of the most significant institutional art collections in the United States. Established in 2006 under the Arts & Medicine Institute, the program operates across more than 35 million square feet of healthcare facilities and holds over 6,300 works by artists from 70 countries. Guided by the conviction that medicine heals the body while art sustains the spirit, the program commissions and collects contemporary works that shape the experience of millions of patients, visitors, and caregivers each year.
EXPO CHICAGO marked Artemin Gallery’s first exhibition in the United States, and Juli Baker and Summer’s first solo presentation there. The series revisits the literature she grew up with — Thai folktales, school-assigned readings, and the novels passed down through family shelves and libraries — reimagining their female characters through painting and sculpture within today’s social and political context. As a girl, the artist was made to dress as Sita, a figure from the Thai literary canon required to prove her purity by walking through fire; that early discomfort became the seed for a body of work tracing how ideas of womanhood are quietly assembled through the women we read about, long before we choose them.

We are grateful to the Cleveland Clinic for welcoming this work into their collection, and everyone who made this acquisition possible.
