Artemin Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of “Déjà vu,” the group exhibition of three artists Brittany Fanning, Evan Trine, and Mona Broschár, altogether showcasing 9 recent works. The exhibition is on view from November 2 to December 7, 2024. The works are all meticulously crafted, each reflecting the artists’ skills from different perspectives. Fanning’s paintings highlight the physical presence of bold lines and brushstrokes; Trine’s works result from his unconventional use of a printer and require precise stitching to reach their final form; and Broschár’s pieces exemplify her mastery of perfect geometry, color, and brightness.
Brittany Fanning (b. 1991, USA) employs lines and pops of striking red to present figures and objects, suggesting a subtle resemblance to the style of Matisse. More significantly, Fanning is skilled at creating a sense of space and immersive atmosphere. While much of her work features architectural or interior layouts, the three pieces in this exhibition focus on botanical life, reminiscent of a rainforest-like ecosystem with overlapping layers. This shift in subject matter is by no means a challenge for this talented artist. Her high-saturation palette and intricate compositions convey the lively spirit of these plants, subtly capturing the immersive quality of Californian sunlight. The works depict only parts of the figures, avoiding facial expressions—a characteristic approach in her practice that lends the pieces a sense of mystery, inviting viewers to expand the narrative beyond the canvas.
Evan Trine (b. 1988, USA) prints digital images onto linen, crafting work that transcends traditional floral still lifes. The printer can be seen as his brush, and the ink cartridges as his paint. As the linen passes through the printer, Trine carefully controls the tension, moving it repeatedly to achieve the desired visual effect. His process places color fields, outlines, and layers with precision, transforming each piece into a visual language beyond conventional flower and vase imagery. Additionally, the stitched assembly of linen pieces, which must be evenly stretched and secured during framing, forms an integral part of his work. This demands exacting attention to each step, particularly in balancing color and shape transitions to achieve ideal cohesion. One might ask, then, are these objects essential focal points? And without brushstrokes, does it still qualify as painting? When we begin to interrogate, it indicates that Trine has successfully elevated his background in photography and studio art, transforming them into a conceptual artistic practice.
Mona Broschár (b. 1985, Germany) brings playful and surreal elements into her vividly imaginative work, leaving a striking impression through her use of color and quirky subject matter. She anthropomorphizes everyday objects with an exaggerated visual twist. For example, abstract shapes come together to form colorful petals or even fingernail-like shapes, floating alongside green bubbles to create a sweet but uncanny atmosphere. In other works, dessert-like themes emerge, showing vibrant colors and polished textures, or commonplace objects are placed out of context and magnified in detail, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. Whether food or not, these objects appear enticingly sweet and visually edible, yet the deliberate, exaggerated proportions evoke a subtle unease. Broschár’s work emphasizes sensory tension, strongly influencing the viewer’s senses—creating an almost tactile, flavorful, aromatic experience, tempting viewers to reach out, yet remaining untouchable.
