“tracing’’
During the transportation of artwork, protective packing is essential to safeguard the contents. From preventing damage and determining the top and bottom of each piece to creating custom crates, we regard each step in this process as an integral part of our creative practice. With international shipping, the packing process requires even more meticulous execution. However, in exhibitions, audiences are rarely aware of the existence of these crates, which ultimately face disassembly and disposal.
Additionally, as an island nation like Taiwan, Japan cannot rely on land transport for international imports and exports. This limitation has led to Japan’s expertise in efficient transport methods, such as lightweight and compact solutions, though these approaches are difficult to apply to art pieces.
Due to the inability to effectively stack or pack artwork, we sometimes encounter the issue of “shipping air.” Further considerations include taxes and insurance for artworks, with costs and transit times to Europe and America often proving to be unavoidable hurdles.
These factors sometimes limit international exhibition opportunities and increase the challenges artists face in expanding abroad. In this context, we believe it’s crucial to explore new perspectives and creative approaches to shipping methods. In our work, tracing, we take “shipping methods”as the central theme, experimenting with transforming transportation and packaging into an artwork itself.
“the ROOM”
Showcasing the works of five contemporary design artists from MULTISTANDARD—Ryota Akiyama, Sohma Furutate, Yosuke Matsushita, Sdanley Shen, and Daiki Tado—this exhibition reinterprets the possibilities of material through furniture and home décor, emphasizing creativity and an experimental spirit.
Ryota Akiyama, based in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, explores the essence of materials through a contemporary lens. By combining traditional and modern elements, he creates new spatial relationships and functionality. His works often originate from environmental contexts, imbuing materials with new value and life.
Sohma Furutate focuses on deconstructing our inherent understanding of objects, examining their influences and perceptions from multiple perspectives. Through refined design language, he breaks conventional rules and guides viewers to re-examine everyday objects, uncovering value from different viewpoints.
Yosuke Matsushita views “objects”as mediums connecting people and spaces. Utilizing experimental processes, he challenges traditional concepts of products and materials, offering innovative choices and values. Based in Eindhoven, Netherlands, his works emphasize spatial interaction and cross-cultural dialogue.
Sdanley Shen adopts the philos ophy of “Think as human,” focusing on the emotional connection between people and his works while emphasizing material formation processes. His creations carry warmth and humanity, transforming rigid materials into resonant artistic forms, exploring the deep relationships between humanity and materials.
Daiki Tado observes materials and their environments from multiple angles, uncovering hidden narratives and transitions through experimentation and field research. He emphasizes the transformative significance of objects within different ecosystems, creating works with depth and social context that challenge viewers’ preconceived notions of materiality.
The “the ROOM” exhibition brings together the works of these five artists to redefine the meaning of everyday objects. It invites viewers to reflect on the transformation and value of materials in various contexts, offering an experience of an extraordinary artistic world elevated from the ordinary.
